I'm a Brooklyn-based novelist, screenwriter, and musician. I wrote "We All Looked Up" (a New York Times Bestseller) and "Thanks for the Trouble." My newest book is "The Anchor & Sophia," first in a trilogy set in a future North America which, for asteroid-collision-related reasons, has regressed to 19th century technology levels (oil lanterns, covered wagons, whiskey used as anesthetic, etc.).

As a musician I've released an EP with Decca/Universal Records, as well as a companion album for my first novel. I also makes music videos, including one that was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum. I currently reside in LA, where I am developing my books as TV shows and movies, so I can make enough money to afford kombucha, spin class, and my Scie

I only just saw this! Apologies.

Honestly, like Voldemort before me, I've divided my soul up and spread it pretty evenly through all my characters (except maybe Bobo; I'm not like Bobo!). So I see pieces of myself in all of them. Eliza is probably the most similar to me in the most ways, but I play dumb video games like Andy, and I'm a high achiever (and a singer) like Anita. Peter is probably the least like me, which is sad, because he's also the nicest person in the book! Oh well...(less)

I hope in a good way. Like a surprise birthday party when you were really craving a surprise birthday party, rather than a surprise birthday party when you were feeling really down on surprise parties, plus it wasn’t even your birthday.

Delany is one of my favorite authors, and I was really interested to read about his early years in the Village. Everything in here having to do with his writing and his marriage was fascinating, but I'll admit I was a little thrown off by some extend ...more

Honestly, I liked this even more than the Southern Reach trilogy (though the trailer for the adaptation looks fantastic). It's still undeniably a VanderMeer production, but there's more heart here, and the plot is a little easier to follow (if you as ...more

This book absolutely lived up to the hype. An original world alongside a unique and convincing take on magic. The twist is a classic, but composed so well that it still managed to pack an emotional punch. Damn good.

More of Tommy's books…
“The best books, they don't talk about things you never thought about before. They talk about things you'd always thought about, but that you didn't think anyone else had thought about. You read them, and suddenly you're a little bit less alone in the world. You're part of this cosmic community of people who've thought about this thing, whatever it happens to be.”
Tommy Wallach, We All Looked Up

“You didn’t win the game of life by losing the least. That would be one of those—what were they called again?—Pyrrhic victories. Real winning was having the most to lose, even if it meant you might lose it all. Even though it meant you would lose it all, sooner or later.”
Tommy Wallach, We All Looked Up

“Those who have much to hope and nothing to lose will always be dangerous.”
